U.S. Stocks Slide Ahead Of Jobs Data; Hot Stocks: JOY, FB, TIVO, CIEN, FFIV, TLB, END, LGF

U.S. stocks ended on a lower note ahead of the key government non-farm payrolls report due Friday, even as a slew of tepid economic readings dented sentiment.


S&P 500 Index lost 0.23 percent to finish at 1,310.33. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 0.21 percent to end at 12,394.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 0.35 percent to close at 2,827.34.


On the US economic front, a data showed that monthly private sector job growth came in weaker than expected. The ADP National Employment reported that U.S. private sector added 133,000 jobs in May, up from a revised 113,000 last month, but trailed expectations of an increase of 154,000 jobs.


The number of Americans who continued to receive jobless benefits unexpectedly rose, a government data showed. Jobless claims increased 10,000 to 383,000 last week from a revised 373,000, while economists projected claims to drop to 370,000.


In other data, U.S. gross domestic product expanded at a 1.9 percent annual rate for the first quarter, slower lower than prior estimate of a 2.2 percent gain, a report from Commerce Department showed.

Economists expect the non-farm payrolls report on Friday to show that 150,000 new jobs were created and unemployment rate held steady at 8.1 percent.

In corporate news, Joy Global Inc. (NYSE:JOY) fell 5.12 percent after the maker of mining equipment slashed its earnings forecast for 2012 amid drop in bookings on expectation that near term order rates could moderate and revenue flatten for a few quarters.


Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) retreated 5.11 percent, extending its slide to 28 percent since it went public at $38 on May 18.


TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) lost 4.69 percent after the digital video recording company posted a loss for the first quarter and forecast a loss again for the second quarter.


Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ:CIEN) rallied 14.06 percent after communications network provider reported surprise second-quarter adjusted earnings.


Talbots Inc. (NYSE:TLB) nearly doubled its value after the retailer of women's apparel agreed to be acquired by private equity firm Sycamore Partners for $2.75 per share in cash. Talbots had earlier this month received a $3.05 per share proposal from New York-based Sycamore, which was up from $3.00 made by the private-equity firm last year.


Endeavour International Corp. (NYSE: END) spiked as much as 81 percent. The oil and energy company has raised its total working interest in the Alba oil field in the UK central North Sea to 25.68 percent.


F5 Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:FFIV) fell 3.78 percent after the provider of application delivery networking technology announced the resignation of Mark Anderson, the company's executive vice president of worldwide sales.


Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (NYSE:LGF) rose 3.66 percent. The entertainment company posted a surprise fourth quarter loss as marketing and acquisition-related costs offset strong revenue growth.

Global Markets:

The European markets closed mixed following weak U.S. jobs and growth reports, with Germany's DAX declining 0.26 percent to finish at 6,264.38. France's CAC40 edged 0.05 percent higher to close at 3,017.01. U.K.'s FTSE 100 rose 0.45 percent to end at 5,320.86.


Asian markets ended lower. The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.49 percent to end at 2,373.05. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.32 percent to close at 18,629.52. Japan's Nikkei 225 tumbled 1.05 percent to close at 8,542.73. India's BSE Sensex finished at 16,218.53, down 0.57 percent.

Commodity & Currency Scan:

Crude oil futures shed 1.34 percent to $86.64 per barrel, and natural gas futures fell 0.17 percent to $2.414 per million metric British thermal units. Gold futures edged 0.03 percent lower to $1,565.3 per ounce, and silver futures lost 0.74 percent to $27.775 per ounce.
 
In the currency market, the euro dipped 0.04 percent against the U.S. dollar to $1.2362. The British pound declined 0.47 percent against the greenback to 1.5407, and the dollar shed 0.92 percent against the Japanese yen to 78.3500.
