STAVANGER, Norway -- Despite Germany’s bold objectives of significantly reducing CO2 emissions, coal has been gaining ground in that country over the last couple of years. Huge amounts of taxpayers’ money have gone toward subsidizing development of renewable energy, while nuclear plants have been shut down, and new coal plants have been built, causing a conversion from the use of nuclear power to coal-fired electricity. Moreover, overly generous subsidies for renewables have resulted in skyrocketing electricity prices and increased carbon emissions. “People and industry will do what is best for them at the moment, while losing sight of the long-term goal,” said Martin Bachmann, board member for E&P at German firm Wintershall.
