Oil, Gas Extraction Jobs Decline in July

The U.S. saw a decline of jobs in both oil and gas extraction and support activities for mining.

Mining employment saw a decline of 5,000 jobs for the month of July, according to data released Friday from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Jobs in oil and gas extraction, which the BLS categorizes under ‘mining’, saw a loss of 1,200 jobs. This decline comes after a month of significant growth as oil and gas extraction added 1,400 jobs in June.

Support activities for mining continued its descent as the nation saw those jobs decline by 2,500 in June. The U.S. has now reported job losses in support activities for mining every month in 2019.

Energy research firm Rystad Energy recently released global analysis in which they said among the oilfield services sector, employment is moving from the shale field to offshore.

The oilfield services sector has continued to struggle throughout the oil and gas industry’s downturn recovery.

Houston-based oilfield services company National Oilwell Varco has been cutting costs and streamlining its operations as it grapples with an uncertain outlook in its North American land market.
