Citing a new long-term time-charter with Eni S.p.A., Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT) reported late last week that it has won a contract to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled shuttle tankers.
The Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. shipyard in South Korea will build the 124,000-tons-deadweight (dwt) vessels, independent tanker owner and operator KNOT noted in a written statement. KNOT added that it anticipates a mid-2022 delivery for the ships, which will operate in the North Sea.
KNOT stated the firm time-charter periods – starting upon delivery – will be seven years for one of the tankers and five years for the other vessel. In both cases, Eni will have the option to charter each tanker for a total of up to 10 years, KNOT added.
“We are pleased to announced that KNOT and Eni extend their partnership in the North Sea with two new LNG shuttle tankers,” commented Trygve Seglem, KNOT’s president and CEO. “Eni, through their ownership of Vår Energi, has many interests in North Sea gas and oil fields and is thus one of the major players in the area.”
According to KNOT, the new LNG-powered shuttle tankers will emit significantly less carbon dioxide than their conventional oil-fueled counterparts. Moreover, the firm stated the vessels will save energy by using battery power during dynamic positioning operation.
The award represents the “third and fourth long-term-charter shuttle-tanker contracts between Eni and KNOT Group,” Seglem noted. “We are pleased that Eni has recognized KNOT’s capabilities and expertise in the shuttle tanker operation.”
